” Earthquake in Delhi-NCR: Tremors Felt Across Half of India, Epicentre at Afghanistan-Pakistan Border”

earthquake in delhi NCR

New Delhi, September 1 – Late Sunday night, strong earthquake tremors were felt across Delhi-NCR and nearly half of India, creating panic among residents. According to the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), the epicentre of the quake was located near the Afghanistan-Pakistan border.

The tremors struck at around 12:55 AM, when most people were asleep. Many rushed out of their homes in fear as windows rattled and buildings shook. In Pakistan, the sudden quake caused chaos, with social media posts showing residents in a state of panic.

Magnitude and Depth of the Quake

Initial reports suggested the earthquake measured 6.7 on the Richter scale, but later the figure was revised to 6.2. The quake occurred at a depth of approximately 15 kilometers, making the tremors feel particularly strong across a wide region. Shallow quakes often cause greater shaking on the surface, which explains the intensity of the tremors felt in Delhi-NCR and surrounding states.

Impact in India and Neighboring Countries

Tremors were reported not only in Delhi-NCR but also in parts of Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, Jammu & Kashmir, Rajasthan, and Madhya Pradesh. In Afghanistan and Pakistan, where the epicentre was located, the quake triggered widespread fear. People evacuated their homes in the middle of the night, gathering in open spaces for safety.

So far, there have been no reports of casualties or major damage in India. Authorities confirmed that essential services and infrastructure remain unaffected. However, officials are closely monitoring the situation in the border regions of Afghanistan and Pakistan, where aftershocks remain a possibility.

Eyewitness Accounts

Residents of Delhi-NCR took to social media to describe their experience. Many reported feeling their beds and ceiling fans shaking. “I woke up suddenly around 1 AM as the entire building was swaying. We rushed downstairs immediately,” said a resident from Noida.

Another resident from Gurgaon added, “The tremors lasted for several seconds. It was scary, especially because it happened in the middle of the night when everyone was asleep.”

Authorities’ Response

Disaster management authorities in both India and Pakistan are on high alert. Citizens have been advised to stay calm, avoid spreading rumors, and follow earthquake safety protocols. Emergency teams in border regions have been mobilized to assess any potential damage.

Conclusion

While the earthquake created panic across half of India, the absence of casualties or large-scale damage has come as a relief. Experts warn that aftershocks may occur in the coming hours, and residents are urged to remain cautious.
